Liverpool green infrastructure strategy shortlisted for RTPI award

03 October 2011

Liverpool's groundbreaking strategy for the city's green spaces has been shortlisted for a high profile Royal Town Planning Institute award.

The Strategy was commissioned by Liverpool City Council's Planning Service and Liverpool Primary Care Trust and written by The Mersey Forest in 2010. It took into account the city's entire green infrastructure - everything from individual trees and private gardens to the city's parks and open water. Nearly two thirds of land was identified as green infrastructure, an asset worth £8billion to the local economy. Recommendations included requiring detailed green infrastructure plans for all major developments, and promoting green roofs and community food growing.

Now the document has been shortlisted in the Spatial Strategy category of the RTPI Awards 2011. As part of the selection process to find the winner, The Mersey Forest and partners gave a presentation to the RTPI panel in Liverpool city centre earlier in September. The winner will be announced later this year.

Meanwhile, the strategy has already begun to be translated into action thanks to £220,000 funding from Liverpool PCT as part of the city's Decade of Health and Wellbeing.
