Glazebury's green play space

Thanks to The Mersey Forest, children of Glazebury in Warrington are enjoying adventures in a new natural interactive play area.

The villagers of Glazebury were given an empty piece of land by local garden centre Bents Garden and Home. Over four years Glazebury Community Play Area Committee, with support from The Mersey Forest, worked with partners to create a landmark new green space for play, relaxation and habitat for wildlife.

The new play area includes climbing and seating areas made from giant logs, a willow tunnel and den-building areas. There's also a community orchard and wildlife-friendly hedges, trees and wildflowers.

Children's play in natural areas has been in steep decline, with some experts linking this to the rise in obesity and childhood mental health problems. Projects like this can help to address this 'nature deficit disorder' by providing a safe space for natural play.

The space was designed using natural sustainable materials – such as tree trunks – with great consideration placed on increasing local biodiversity. Local volunteers have played a major role in creating the natural features by planting trees, hedgerows, wildflowers and weaving a willow dome.

Support and funding for the project came from Bents Garden & Home, Big Tree Plant, Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council, Cory Environmental Trust in Britain through the Landfill Communities Fund, Eric Wright Civil Engineering, Lloyds Bank, Taylor Business Park, The Conservation Volunteers, United Utilities and Warrington Borough Council.
