Access for all at Big Wood
Big things have been happening at Halton's Big Wood in recent months thanks to £10,500 funding secured by The Mersey Forest.
Through this funding, landowners The Woodland Trust have been able to improve footpaths and disabled access at the site, and woodland management work has been carried out to make the entrance to this green haven more inviting.
Later this spring the project will also see benches by a local chainsaw sculptor installed to provide seating at the pond and yew grove.
Secured by The Mersey Forest, funding for the improvements was provided through the Landfill Communities Fund by Runcorn-based chemical manufacturer INEOS ChlorVinyls.
Tours on segways (two wheeled low carbon electric vehicles) through Big Wood are now possible thanks to the improvements, and have been very successful with over 200 visitors taking a spin so far. The license with the local business that provides the service has now been extended. A second business will also begin running Nordic Walking tours through the wood, with both of these businesses set to increase visitor numbers to Big Wood and boost the local economy.
The Woodland Trust has installed two pressure pad counters to monitor the upturn in visitor numbers.
