Pupils and staff at Hudson Primary School, in Maghull, Sefton had a great time helping to plant trees on their school fields earlier this year.

They were joined by the Friends of Maghull and District (FOMD), who helped organise the planting, alongside the Mayor of Sefton, Cllr Clare Carragher and the Mersey Forest's Community Forester.

Over two separate planting days pupils and volunteers planted 687 whips and 70 meters of hedging, helping to introduce more greenspace around the site and providing a space for local wildlife to thrive.

Before each planting session took place, Dave Armson, Community Forester at The Mersey Forest gave the pupils an introductory talk, explain the best technique to plant the trees, and explaining the wide range of benefits trees can bring for both communities and the local environment. Following the safety briefing, showing them how to use the tools, the pupils set to work helping to plant a variety of broad leaf species such as Alder, Oak, Hawthorn and Hornbeam.

Niki Craddock, headteacher at Hudson Primary School, said: "We recently had a new car park installed requiring lots of landscaping, so when we were approached by FOMD and the Mersey Forest; to create a mixed wildlife friendly hedge along the whole front perimeter of the school, twinned with woodland planting, and building on our previous forestry school initiatives, we were absolutely delighted.

"The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves, with introductions and support from Dave at the Mersey Forest and the generous volunteers from FOMD."

Larger standard trees are also due to be planted on school grounds during next year's planting season.

This project was funded by the Northern Forest, a project that is helping to transform the landscape from Liverpool to the Yorkshire Coast.
