Urban Catchment Forestry

The Mersey Forest is currently developing a programme to use urban trees and woodlands to reduce flooding, improve water quality, and bring wider benefits.

Surface water flooding and poor water quality are already challenges in urban areas, with significant economic costs and impacts on health and wellbeing, and they are set to intensify with climate change and increasing urbanisation. Whilst traditional engineering approaches are part of the solution, evidence suggests that urban trees can also play a role. Despite this, at present, they tend to not be strategically used in Europe for their water management benefits.

Inspired by work in the US, the Urban Catchment Forestry programme is seeking to address this. It will bring together a wide range of partners to make the business case for the strategic use of urban trees and woodlands to reduce flooding, improve water quality, and bring wider economic, social and environmental benefits.

If you would like to be involved in this programme, please contact The Mersey Forest team on 01925 816217.
