South St.Helens residents benefit from community involvement at two new woodlands

26 October 2009

The Mersey Forest's community involvement programme at two new woodlands in south St.Helens continues to bring real benefits to local communities.

Brickfields

At Brickfields, the new community woodland being developed south of Sherdley Park, The Mersey Forest have worked with St.Helens Council, Groundwork, Cycling Projects Northwest and landowners the Forestry Commission to deliver an exciting programme of events to get local residents involved in their environment.

150 people attended the Brickfields summer family fun day, and a photography day with BBC Wildlife and RSPB photographer Ben Hall was full to capacity with eager enthusiasts keen to try their hand. The day yielded some great photos taken by local residents, including the one at the top of this article.

Other events have included a winter bike ride and a nature walk and bird box making event attended by over 40 people.

Griffin Wood

Meanwhile at Griffin Wood, the new woodland off Gorsey Lane planted with the help of Clock Face and Sutton Manor residents in 2007, the volunteer 'Friends of Griffin Wood' group continues to thrive with the support of The Mersey Forest.

The group held a number of successful events and training sessions in 2008/09, including a tree and bulb planting event in November. Two new signs to welcome visitors to the woodland have been erected, one at the entrance to the site, the other immediately adjacent to the M62. For more information visit the woodland's own blog.
