Liverpool City Region Green Infrastructure Framework

Cities across the globe are catching on to a vital concept: that a green infrastructure approach can help deliver a range of benefits essential to our way of life, including attracting investment, safeguarding jobs and supporting growth, managing air and water quality and boosting health and wellbeing.

Green infrastructure refers to our natural environment - the green and blue spaces in and around our cities and towns. It can refer to a single street tree or the River Mersey.

Green infrastructure planning is a new approach to managing our natural environment, going beyond business as usual, and focussing on reaping maximum benefits for people, wildlife, and the economy.

The Liverpool and Warrington Green Infrastructure Framework has been developed by The Mersey Forest with funding from Natural England. It covers Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens, Halton, Warrington and Wirral. It consists of 12 activities:

The framework provides a city region level strategic assessment of green infrastructure that can assist in the development of:

  • Local investment in green infrastructure as one of the city region's 'critical infrastructures' alongside waste, water, transport and energy
  • Liverpool City Region priorities such as the Multi Area Agreement and emerging strategic framework
  • Local Development Frameworks
  • Sustainable Community Strategies
