Bittern population is booming

17 February 2012

We were pleased to read in the national press that the bittern population is finally growing, after years of being at worrying low levels.

As reported in The Guardian, the population recently reached new heights, and it is estimated that there are currently at least 100 of the birds in the country. This is exciting news when we consider how this species was endangered and close to extinction, up to the point where there were only estimated to be 11 bitterns left in 1997.

The news followed nicely on from a post earlier this month on The Mersey Forest Facebook page reporting a bittern sighting at Budworth Mere near Northwich, a regular haunt for the species in recent years (read more on the Birds in Cheshire and Wirral website).

So keep your eyes peeled, you might have the privilege to see one of the rarest birds in the country in real life!
